Cedar Island Project

Isaiah Messerly checks small mammal traps. The Cedar Island team is conducting an inventory of plants and animals for Black Hawk County.

Students and faculty in the Ecosystem management program get immersed in their subject. August 2007 was very rainy, and the Cedar Island Wildlife Area is a swamp savanna.

Professor Mark Myers talks with visiting lecturer Cathi Fouchi, a natural resources planner for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

PSM student Michele Fuhrer cuts down a tree during a savanna restoration work day in late October. Safety is the top priority in all field operations.

Kim Kreiling proves that the Trimble can work in the rain. Kim is taking a course in Geographic Positioning Systems.

Megan Reehl collects some late-blooming flowers for Plant Systematics on an island in the Cedar River. Students who haven't had Plant Systematics, a prerequisite for the PSM program, can take it in the Fall and apply it toward their electives.

Urban Stormwater Project

UNI Assistant Director of Operations Planning, Paul Meyermann, leads the students on a tour of campus stormwater and stream restoration projects.

A Biocell receives and treats stormwater runoff from a UNI campus parking lot.

Erin Harpenau learns about stream restoration practices with Paul Meyermann, UNI Assistant Director of Operations Planning.

Erin Harpenau examines an old water conveyance system draining a parking lot. Many of these systems have begun to fail and students are learning new ways of treating stormwater runoff that address water quality issues.

Rebecca Kauten, Watershed Coordinator for the Dry Run Creek Watershed Project in the Cedar Falls area, shows students how to document the effects of excessive stormwater runoff. This stream, located within city limits, has developed severe erosion problems due to runoff from neighborhoods and a school parking lot.

Prairie Biomass Energy Project

Kim Kreiling collects plant samples to estimate biomass productivity for the Prairie Biomass Energy project. All students help with each project to gain breadth of knowledge.
